TODD HEWITT IS THE LAST BOY IN PRENTISSTOWN.
But Prentisstown isn't like other towns. Everyone can hear everyone else's thoughts in a constant, overwhelming, never-ending Noise. There is no privacy. There are no secrets.
Or are there?
Just one month away from the birthday that will make him a man, Todd unexpectedly stumbles upon a spot of complete silence.
Which is impossible.
Prentisstown has been lying to him.
And now he is going to have to run...
My Thoughts of The Knife of Never Letting Go:
The Knife of Never Letting Go by Patrick Ness is the thrilling first instalment to the Chaos Walking trilogy, setting it off with a bang! You are thrown head first into the alien life of Prentisstown where men can hear each other's thoughts, however when our main character Todd finds a silent spot, all hell breaks loose and he must run for his life. We are taken on an epic and terrifying adventure with Todd, Viola and Todd's lovable dog Manchee as they run from an ever-growing army who are desperate to keep the silence secret from him. It is also a realisation of the difficult choices you must make as you grow up.
Throughout the book, Todd become my favourite character from his bravery and courage to protect Viola and Manchee but also as he realised his own flaws, along with the flaws of his town and his old way of life. Both Todd and Viola are very young and that is what scared me most; they are under constant threat of death and I know if I was them, I would not be as brave! However, you can't help but love Manchee too, I want a Manchee!!
Patrick Ness created the most intense and heartbreaking scenes within the book, only adding to your love of some characters and the bubbling hatred of others, such as Aaron, the Minister in Prentisstown: he is the character you hope gets his just desserts. However, no clues are given to the unexpected plot twists, making them all the most shocking. I was left feeling hurt and just livid after some scenes; when you think everything will be okay and then it just all goes to pot! Though in saying that, it did make me stay up until 4am because I just couldn't put the book down until I knew what happened to Todd, Viola and Manchee.
Overall, I absolutely loved this page-turner of a book, the way Patrick Ness has written it makes the story even more real to you as a reader and the character of Todd all the more likeable. The cliffhanger ending had me sobbing: a combination of the terrifying and devastating ending to the book as well as realising that I had to wait to buy the next one to find out what happened. (I can't wait to read the next one now!)
This book would appeal to ANYBODY who enjoys action-packed, fast paced novels which keep you guessing through the entire story. I fell in love this book almost instantly and I strongly recommend everyone to read it, if you haven't already!
